What Motivates Learning?

No, I'm not going to say failure!  Although it's a gift at times, it is not a good motivation for life long learning.  To be motivated just to make sure you don't fail is a sad, stressful, mind-numbing life.  I know, I lived it (see the about page).  From observing my students and my colleagues this year, I have seen increased motivation brought on by choice.

Mommy Fail, Teacher Fail

I'm still looking for the silver lining of this weeks' fails.  Yes, there were many. My son ended up hospitalized for asthma and his twin sister is down with double ear infections and pink eye - all while my husband was out of town.  After a week of scraping together inadequate sub plans, I'm worried to go back to school on Monday.

My family comes first. Especially since I never thought I would have one.

Rigor  and .....Failure?

In the beginning of my career I thought that rigor looked like giving assignments with lots of components and moving parts that would take students weeks of careful organization and planning to execute. Now I of course realize that rigor is more than a super long to-do list.  To me, rigor is pushing students past what is easy and comfortable for them while delving deeper into a topic that at the surface level they seem to understand quite well.
